Chapter 56

This world lacked lip balm for sure, and Bai Chen felt like his cheeks were burning when he realized that it might indeed be Zhu Ge’s saliva that was sticking to his skin.

Zhu Ge’s lips were extremely hot, and it was as if they had the power to produce flames, and the flames licked Bai Chen’s cheeks to increase the temperature of the soft surface.

It wasn’t even a hot kiss, but his body felt so excited just from that peck. Yes, it was indeed just a peck as the black-haired man pulled away immediately after the brief contact between the cheek and lips.

The lips were no longer on his cheek, and Bai Chen felt his cheeks suddenly turn cold as if he had just put his head in the fridge. The thought was ridiculous, and he quickly shook his head before lowering his head to read the book in his lap.

He could feel that Zhu Ge’s eyes were on him the entire time, but he pretended as if he didn’t notice as he continued to stare at the old book. He didn’t even want to question the sudden kiss.

Maybe he didn’t feel comfortable sitting on the man’s lap earlier, but now he pretended like he was sitting on a soft sofa.

Zhu Ge’s lap was actually not that bad, and even if it wasn’t as soft as the sofa from his previous life, it wasn’t as hard as a wooden board.

The book in Bai Chen’s hands was like an ancient book, and even if he could recognize the characters in the book, he was not used to reading such vertically written inscriptions.

.....

However, just as he was about to read the book, he remembered something and turned his head to the side again. Frowning at the man behind him, he then asked, “You haven’t answered my question. How did you know that this book about the royal family was under my ass before?”

Bai Chen almost gave up because he was too lazy to look for the book earlier, but Zhu Ge suddenly found it right under his ass. The taller man didn’t even tell him beforehand and just carelessly touched his butt before bringing him to stand on his two feet, and that was a bit weird.

“About that...” Zhu Ge replied. “Before I left this pavilion to look for cloth, I caught a glimpse of the book. I didn’t know that it was the book you were looking for, so I ignored it before.”

Bai Chen didn’t even notice that Zhu Ge was surveying the books in the pavilion before he left the pavilion to find some clothes for the two of them, but the man’s sharp eyes managed to read the title of the book in no time.

“You could even remember this book when you only scanned the books in this pavilion for a short period. I didn’t expect your memory to be better than that of a goldfish,” Bai Chen casually commented, but Zhu Ge faintly showed a displeased expression on his face when he heard it.

“Why are you suddenly comparing me to a goldfish? Do I look like a goldfish to your eyes?” The man in red asked coldly.

Hearing the raven-haired man’s cold response, Bai Chen flinched slightly. He accidentally said something about a goldfish’s 3-second memory that wasn’t even a fact in his previous life, and Zhu Ge probably didn’t know about it and misunderstood his joke.

“I was just joking,” Bai Chen replied as he avoided the man’s sharp gaze. “Don’t think too much about it. You don’t look like a goldfish at all.”

Bai Chen didn’t immediately get a response, but then he heard the other man sigh before saying, “About that book, I’m not sure if it’s really the book you’re looking for.”

It seemed that Zhu Ge didn’t want to prolong the matter related to the lame joke anymore, and Bai Chen decided to play along. “What do you mean?” He asked.

Sighing again upon hearing the question, Zhu Ge then replied, “I know you are looking for a book containing information about the Dong Lang royal family, but Dong Lang has been around for many years, and there are so many royal families in this empire. I’m not sure if what you’re looking for is in the book.”

What Zhu Ge had just said did make sense, and Bai Chen turned his gaze to the book again before starting to read the writing on the first page. His eyes widened as he read the text.

“BAI GUOWEI’S FAMILY HISTORY.”

Bai Chen might not be the smartest person in the world, but he still remembered that Bai Guowei was the name of the current Dong Lang Emperor. Bai Guowei was Bai Chen’s father, and he knew that he had found the book he was looking for.

“It’s the book I’m looking for,” Bai Chen replied as he brought his hand to caress the surface of the book. For some reason, he felt a strange connection to the book, but then he thought that it was because he was in Bai Chen’s body now.

Meanwhile, Zhu Ge frowned upon hearing Bai Chen’s answer. He leaned forward slightly to read the writing on the first page of the book, and he frowned even more. “That’s the history of the current Emperor. Didn’t you say that you were looking for information about your ancestors? Maybe we should try to find other books.”

Bai Chen was dumbfounded when he heard Zhu Ge’s statement. He was not the smartest man in the world, he had even forgotten the reason he used to answer Zhu Ge’s curiosity earlier. He subconsciously answered just now, and Zhu Ge probably felt suspicious of him.

Trying to cover his panic, he cleared his throat and come up with another excuse, “We can try to find another book later, but now I want to read this book first. I want to know about my family story in this book.”

Bai Chen only hoped that Zhu Ge wouldn’t feel suspicious anymore. He knew that the man was sharp, and he did not want his identity to be exposed in front of the man.

But perhaps he was lucky that Zhu Ge leaned back again before sighing. “All right. You can read the book then,” he replied.

Hearing the answer, Bai Chen almost breathed a sigh of relief as he thought that the man wouldn’t bother him any further, but he was wrong because he suddenly felt a weight on his right shoulder.

His body froze when he heard Zhu Ge speak, “I’ll let you read the book in peace, but please lend me your shoulder. I feel very sleepy right now, and I want to sleep for a while.”

Zhu Ge leaned his head on Bai Chen’s shoulder, and not only that, but the man in red also started to wrap his arms around Bai Chen’s stomach. Now Bai Chen couldn’t even move an inch because he felt trapped by the raven-haired man.

His breath was even ragged, and he could feel his heart beating fast. It was indeed strange, but Bai Chen told himself that the cause of the phenomenon was simply the closeness between him and Zhu Ge.

That man was the first man he could physically get so close to, and he thought that was the reason behind the strange feeling in his heart.

Taking a deep breath while closing his eyes to start counting from one to five, Bai Chen tried to calm himself down.

Normally, he would only use that method to calm himself down when he was angry, but he was trying to use that method now even if he wasn’t angry. He only hoped that he would become calmer by doing so.

And Bai Chen did feel that his heart was calmer than before, but when he opened his eyes and glanced to the side, he knew that he could be calmer not because of the method he had just used, but because he heard Zhu Ge’s steady breathing.

The man in red was indeed asleep on his shoulder, and how the man’s steady breath brought peace to his heart for some reason. And even if his right shoulder felt extremely heavy due to the presence of Zhu Ge’s head, he was not bothered by it. On the contrary, he didn’t want to disturb the man’s rest as he started reading the book on his lap.

‘Perhaps I’m starting to go crazy in this crazy world,’ thought Bai Chen as he focused his eyes on reading every word in the book. Indeed, it was the book he was looking for.
